LANDSDOWN AIRPORT — Met with immediate grumbles and groans from passengers, a flight to Denver, Colorado was delayed this morning after pilot Jack “Eagle” Lewis misplaced the keys to his Airbus A350 before departure.
“I could’ve sworn they were in my jacket pocket,” said Capt. Lewis before instructing passengers to look around their seats, especially between cushions, under arm rests, and in the magazine pockets to see if the plane’s keys could be there.
The pilot went on to announce “the last time I remember seeing them was this morning when I placed them in my jacket after eating an English muffin. I had them for the flight last night, and the one before that,” he continued as it sounded like he was jumbling through a bag “I 100% had them at some point.”
Capt. Lewis became defensive when passengers and flight crew began groaning and grumbling in frustration saying “Hey let’s not act like it’s never happened to any of you before. You go to get groceries, hop in the car and forget the keys are in the catch-all bowl in the kitchen. This is practically the same thing."
It wasn’t long before the captain was seen tearing up every cushion in the plane, dumping out luggage and pulling up the wind flaps to check underneath before he came to the conclusion another pilot may have taken his keys by mistake.
Flight crews responded by saying it was extremely unlikely another pilot flew off with the keys and recommended next time he make a spare key that he leave on top of the aircraft's tire.
"All pilots should be making copies of keys and sticking them on top of the plane's tires, under a mat on the runway, or leave a copy with a family friend in case of events like this. It's common sense really," said flight attendant Larry Wind before making another announcement that it'll "just be a minute."
The plane was seen on the go when Capt. Lewis eventually found the keys in his back pocket before shuffling them under the co-pilot’s seat saying "oh wow how did these get under there!" although it wasn’t long before Lewis delayed the flight once more saying he may have left the iron on in his house at which point he turned the aircraft around to “go and check just to be certain.”
